Fluid fence

A fence is more than a structure that delineates and protects space—it is also a decorative element imbued with social meaning. In particular, Art Nouveau-style fences, with their organic forms that merge nature and architecture, evoke a refined yet dreamlike atmosphere. I was drawn to this duality and sought to reinterpret the fence using contemporary materials and methods.

Using transparent resin (synthetic polymer), I recreated ornamental fences from the past, layering them with natural objects to evoke an organic texture. In doing so, the fence transforms into a fluid, ever-changing presence that transcends its traditional function as a static boundary. Its solid yet flowing form conveys a sense of embedded vitality, inviting a meditation on the tension and harmony between nature and artifice, life and death, perfection and imperfection.

I regard plants as sculptural entities shaped by both genetics and environment. By capturing their temporality and finitude in resin, I intervene—transforming the ephemeral into something enduring. Yet the process remains unpredictable. As I apply resin layer by layer and cure it with UV light, unexpected flows and surfaces emerge. The resin may move in unintended directions, creating new lines and planes; even at moments I believe the form is complete, further changes may appear. This interplay between control and surrender mirrors how plants respond to their surroundings and grow into optimal forms.

This work invites a reconsideration of the concept of "boundary." Rather than a fixed divider, a boundary can be a fluid, relational entity—constantly shifting in response to its context. Through the coexistence of solidity and movement, intention and accident, balance and tension, I hope this piece offers a renewed perspective on the relationship between nature and the artificial.
